I have the privilege of having a dear friend in Greece and I truly enjoy all the beautiful pictures that he sends me of the landscapes and the food! I love the incredibly healthy blend of the Greek Tzatziki sauce and am always amazed at how the combination of ingredients is not only delicious, but also medicinal. Like Hippocrates recommended using food as our medicine, well this sauce holds up to his standard.
The garlic and lemon have incredible natural immune boosting properties, while the dill and the cucumber are soothing and anti-inflammatory, plus the yogurt is full of probiotics, all making this my favorite way to keep my kids healthy and eating plenty of veggies because they love dipping them into the Tzatziki sauce. We put this sauce on everything from meats, to eggs, veggies, lentil soup, sandwiches, as a dip for chips, and of course for gyros! If ever I need a dip for a party tray - this is the one I make!
The following recipe is the most authentic and delicious one ever - give it a try and see!
Let me know how you love it
Authentic Greek Tzatziki Sauce
Ingredients:
4 cups Greek yogurt (32 ounce tub and NOT the fat free kind)
1 small peeled and grated cucumber (Persian cucumbers are a great size)
1 clove peeled and grated garlic
Juice of half a lemon
1 generous Tablespoon dried dill
4 Tablespoons extra virgin Greek olive oil
6 ounces of feta cheese
Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
Empty container into a mixing bowl and add all ingredients to the yogurt. Mix well until combined and return to the yogurt tub. Store in the refrigerator.
Pairs wonderfully with gyros, souvlaki, grilled meats, eggs, veggies, and chips! Opa!
